July 26th 2007 05:41 Link: craighill.net/2007/07/26/burj-al-arab-hotel-d... The Burj-Al-Arab is the tallest building used exclusively as a hotel anywhere in the world, and the only seven star hotel in existence. It stands in the sea, in the Persian Gulf, on an artificial island, over 900 feet away from the beach. The Burj-Al-Arab is located in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. At 321 metres (1,053 feet) tall, and one of the most distinctive structures for a hotel building in the world. Esoteric Bookshop Craig,
I just watched a doco on the making of this modern day palace and could not believe the extravangance, truly I am at a loss for words at the thought of it.
* The hotel's self-characterization as a "7-star" property is considered by travel professionals to be hyperbole, and an attempt to out-do a number of other hotels which claim "6-star" status. All major travel guides and hotel rating systems, however, have a 5-star maximum.
Not that opulence has ever impressed me, I am left to wonder what the difference would be of that one extra star at that level of extravagance?
The mind boggles...

The World Today I think Dubai has got it right. They've use their wealth from the oil (before it runs out) to firmly establish themselves as the number one place in the world for shopping and tourism. People go there just to spend money, and the emirate makes sure it has what no one else in the world has.

Esoteric Bookshop Craig,
That is absolutely right, they are a very smart people, I agree.
Its like they have seen the writing on the wall and done something about it, something our own lame governments of the west seem incapable of doing?
